Selected Topics in Ecology of Production

FEKT-BPC-VPEAcad. year: 2025/2026

The subject deals with the issue of electrical engineering production and its impact on the environment. Within selected chapters, specific aspects of ecological practices and procedures in industrial production are examined. The subject focuses on the principles of sustainable production and its main goals, such as waste minimization, efficient resource utilization, emission reduction, and pollution prevention. Part of the subject addresses the issue of sustainable development of human society, closely related to the Green Deal initiative. The Green Deal initiative introduces a range of changes in various areas, with one of the key areas being the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants in electrical engineering production. The student will gain a comprehensive understanding of the goals and tools used to achieve carbon neutrality within the Czech Republic, or the European Union (EU).

Mode of study

Not applicable.

Entry knowledge

The subject is designed as an introduction to the issues of production ecology in the context of contemporary demands for environmental protection and the reduction of emissions of pollutants. No special knowledge or skills beyond the scope of regular high school studies are required to complete the subject.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Completed project on a selected topic, up to a total of 40 points, including:
- Project presentation: maximum of 20 points
- Research for the project: maximum of 20 points

Final exam in written form: maximum of 60 points.

Conditions for successfully completing the subject are determined annually by the updated decree of the subject guarantor.

Aims

The graduate of the subject will gain a comprehensive overview of the production of major greenhouse gases and pollutants from the environment of electrical engineering production. Within the subject, the student will become acquainted with significant sources of pollution both from the field of electrical engineering production and directly from the production and processing of electrical energy (emissions and pollution directly related to the production of electricity in thermal power plants). The subject graduate will also learn to define individual toxic substances and greenhouse gases along with the main mechanisms contributing to global warming. Concepts such as sustainability, product life cycle, linear vs. circular economy, carbon neutrality, Green Deal, FitFor55, COP conferences, Kyoto and Montreal Protocols, etc., will be introduced and explained within the subject. The graduate of the subject will thus acquire the basic knowledge necessary to understand the broader context in the field of production ecology and associated environmental protection.
