Renovation and Restoration of Monuments

Students will familiarize themselves with the practical side of performing maintenance and renovation on concrete examples of valuable architectural heritage, as well as with the involvement of other professions (restorer, heritage conservation workers, archaeologist etc.).
In the study programme “Architecture and Urban Design” the course is part of the theoretical courses.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The end-of-course test with textual or graphical tasks verifies students' understanding of the topics presented during the course.
The lectures are not compulsory, participation in excursions is compulsory.

Aims

The aim of the course is to introduce students to a scale of tasks, problems, and methods in designing and realisation of architectural heritage renovation, and to introduce this on particular cases from practice.
Students will go through a field experience and thus will gain knowledge and skills in mostly practical form of architectural heritage preservation such as:
– preparation and performance of building archaeology survey (BAS);
– basic understanding of restoration research and the principles of cooperation with restorers;
– basic understanding of archaeological research and the principles of cooperation with archaeologists;
– specific technological aspects of traditional materials and construction preservation;
– principles of cooperation with other specialists and institutes (e.g. National Heritage Institute, „site manager“ of a world heritage site etc.).
