Course detail
Statics of Building Constructions 1
FA-SC1-KEAcad. year: 2025/2026
The course introduces students to the method of designing load-bearing structures of buildings. The course covers both the structure as a whole and the detailed design of individual elements. An important part of the course is the selection of a suitable structural scheme for a selected building, its readable sketching and optimum loading according to the EC methodology. An integral part of the course is the analysis of the internal forces on the elements and the analysis of the bearing capacity of the selected profiles according to EC.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
Student must attend 70 % of seminars. During the semester, student continuously completes at least 3 consultations of the seminar work. Replacement of compulsory attendance at semionars is solved individually by prior agreement with the lecturer.
Aims
- The student will understand what a building structure is, what makes it up and what its specifics are
- The student will be able to draw the structural system of a building in clear sketches.
- The student will be able to identify the essential elements that make up a building's skeleton.
- The student will understand the principle of Limit State Theory and how it evaluates the load capacity and serviceability of individual elements.
- The student will understand the loads acting on different parts of a building, be able to quantify them based on EC standards and create essential combinations for the load capacity and serviceability of a structure.
- The student will be able to differentiate between the basic types of stresses in building structures and draw simple internal force diagrams for elements.
- The student can calculate the capacity of simple bent elements of different materials based on the EC methodology.
