Publishing Research in Art and Design

The course consists of instructional blocks comprising lectures followed by seminars. The lectures introduce students to the specifics of research work in the fields of art and design, various methods of presenting and publishing its results, and the criteria for excellence. In the seminars, students engage in discussions about the production of knowledge in art and design, the institutional grounding and current direction of research in these fields, and the politics and ethics of research in art and design.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Attendance at seminars is mandatory, with one unexcused absence permitted. A greater number of excused absences may be compensated by completing an assignment specified in consultation with the instructor. Classes take place on the premises of the Faculty of Fine Arts at BUT on dates specified at the beginning of the semester. The course credit is awarded based on attendance and active participation in seminars. The teaching methods include lectures with presentations, seminars, discussions, and meetings with invited experts.

Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with various methods of presenting and publishing research results, with a focus on practical research in which artistic or design practice serves as a means of research. The course provides students with knowledge that will help them achieve excellent results and teaches them the rules for reporting these outcomes.

Syllabus

  1. Historické kořeny a institucionalizace uměleckého výzkumu, definice uměleckého výzkumu, instituce a platformy pro výzkum v umění a designu, kánon akademického uměleckého výzkumu, organizace a dokumenty zakládající akademický umělecký výzkum a doktorské studium umění a designu, typologie výzkumu v umění a designu.
  2. Artikulace umělecké či designové praxe jako výzkumné, formáty pro prezentaci a publikaci projektů výzkumu v umění a designu, disertační práce v oblasti umění a designu.
  3. Kritéria excelence vědecké práce, Frascati manuál, struktura oborů OECD (oblasti výzkumu a vývoje, FORD), vykazování excelentních výsledků tvůrčí a vědecké práce (RUV a RIV), definice druhů výsledků, publikace v odborných časopisech, citační databáze a rejstříky vědeckých časopisů (Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO, ERIH+), ORCID, publikační etika, open access publikace.
  4. Nové formáty pro výzkum uměleckou či designovou tvorbou, odborné časopisy pro umělecký výzkum, formát „expozice“ ve výzkumném katalogu (Research Catalogue), výzkumná výstava, performativní přednáška, prezentační a publikační formáty typu „making and doing“ pro humanitní a sociálně-vědní výzkum.
  5. Hodnocení výsledků výzkumu v umění a designu, kritéria excelentní praxe, příklady zdařilých publikací.
  6. Politika výzkumu v umění a designu, průniky a rozpory tvůrčí práce a vědeckého výzkumu, „singularizace vědění“, „undisciplining“, výzkum v umění a designu jako sociálně angažovaná praxe, udržitelnost výzkumu v umění a designu.
