Offered to foreign students

Of all faculties

Entry knowledge

Knowledge at secondary school level is required. Furthermore, the student should have basic knowledge of the primary parameters of the line - resistance, inductance, capacitance and shunt conductance.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

A maximum of 20 points is from test of theoretical and practical knowledge in exercises and 10 points for completing laboratory exercises. A maximum of 15 points is awarded for an individual project. The minimum extent of elaboration of the individual parts is specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer and updated for every academic year. The final written exam is evaluated with a maximum of 55 points.
The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year. Laboratory is compulsory, missed lessons will be replaced by appointment with the teacher.

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with telecommunication transmission media, especially with cable media. During the course students obtain both theoretical and practical knowledge of different types of media, both metallic and optical.
The student acquires practical knowledge in the field of transmission media used in telecommunication networks. The main focus is on cable lines, namely coaxial cables, twisted pair and an optical fiber. For each type of media, the student learns basic parameters and measurement options. Students also acquires knowledge about the installation and cabling, documentation and localization. Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
- understand the types of transmission media,
- propose a suitable type of transmission medium for connection,
- design a topology for information transfer,
- design technology connecting copper cables,
- design technology connecting optical cables,
- perform basic measurements on the transmission media,
- be able to locate faults on cables.
