History of Music in the 20th Century 2

The evolution of music, particularly of the European continent in the 20th century, and understanding the patterns of changes in artistic styles and compositional techniques. The social situation in the 19th and 20 centuries and its reflection in art: production of the sixties generation - Skrjabin, Mahler, Ives. Bearers of new ideas: Satie, Stravinskij, Les Six, Hindemith, Bartók. The second Viennese school and the onset of dodecaphony. The situation in the Czech states, Janacek and Martinu. The specific situation in the USA - Gershwin and Bernstein. Stalinist terror and production in the USSR. Reasons for the emergence of the post-war avant-garde and its main representatives. The Polish school, its specifics, representatives, and benefit. France: from Honegger to Messiaen. Electroacoustic music. The current situation; an overview of existing streams and composers at home and abroad.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of general education is required, on the basis of which the student has passed the admission procedure.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The evaluation of study results follows the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and the Dean's Regulation on the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. At the end of the semester the student will submit a seminar paper in written form containing analysis and characterization of the chosen composition of the 20th century within the bounds of the subject. Up to 100 points are given for the final oral examination, and it is necessary to earn at least 50 points for its successful completion.
Forms of the checked instructions are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantee of the course and updated for every academic year.

Aims

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the evolution of music, particularly on the European continent in the 20th century.
The student will be able to:
- name the major composers of the world of 19th and 20th centuries and characterize their productions,
- name the major European authors of first half of the 20th century and characterize their productions,
- name the important Czech composers of first half of the 20th century and characterize their productions,
- explain the patterns of changes in artistic styles and compositional techniques of the 20th century,
- describe the second Viennese atonal school in terms of compositional technique.
- name the major composers of the second half of the 20th century from the USA and describe their productions,
- name the major composers of USSR and describe their productions,
- explain the reasons for the post-war avant-garde and list its main representatives,
- describe the Polish school and its specifics, as well as name its representatives,
- name the major French composers of the second half of the 20th century and describe their productions,
- describe the history of electroacoustic music, its main streams and representatives,
- describe the current situation in music and name existing streams and significant Czech and world composers.
