Telecommunication Systems

The course deals with digital telecommunications system architectures, with description of the building blocks function and with the methods of signal processing used. The course introduces the techniques of signal processing from analog to digital conversion through the source and channel coding, encryption, modulation, to multiple access techniques or synchronization. The basic types of transmission media are presented and their influence on transmitted signals. Selected signal processing techniques are demonstrated in laboratory measurements. Students will use the gained knowledge in related courses oriented to specific wired and wireless communication systems.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of bachelor mathematics (integral calculus, solution of equations, fundamentals of probability analysis and statistics), fundamentals of signal processing (convolution, correlation, filtering, spectrum analysis), and fundamentals of communications (see BPA-KSY or equivalent) are requested.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Students can obtain maximally 30 points for their activities during semester and 70 points for the final exam. The honored activities are as follows: one midterm test oriented to the application of selected signal processing techniques (10 points) and laboratory measurements (20 points). The written final exam is based on the theory as well as calculations (70 points).
Laboratory exercises are compulsory. Missed lessons can be made up usually by the end of semester.

Aims

The aim of course is to introduce the structure of telecommunication systems, the characteristics of the transmission environment and the methods of signal processing in the sub-blocks of this system.
The graduate is able to: (1) describe the common telecommunication system architecture, (2) explain the basic building blocks operation, (3) characterize the transmission media and influences of the transmission environment, (4) explain the methods of signal processing in the sub-parts of the system, (5) discuss the signal processing techniques in specific systems.

  • History of communication systems, theoretical foundations of communication, channel capacity.
  • Digital communication system architecture. Formatting and source coding.
  • Source coding of speech, image, video, and data.
  • Cryptography, symmetric and asymmetric ciphering, RSA, El-Gammal.
  • Channel coding. Linear codes. Hamming codes.
  • Cyclic and convolutional codes. LDPC codes.
  • Pulse modulation in the baseband, PAM, PWM, PPM, line codes.
  • Signal detection in a noise, matched filter.
  • Analog modulations (AM, QAM, FM and PM).
  • Digital modulation of MPSK, MFSK, MQAM, MSK and their modifications.
  • Multiple access techniques(FDMA, TDMA, CDMA). Multiplexing methods.
  • Radio interface, transmitter and receiver concept.
  • Synchronization. Carrier recovery. Symbol timing regeneration. Network synchronization.
