Methodology of Scientific Work

The course is designed as a practical introduction to the basics of writing professional and scientific texts. It includes an overview of research and science methods, as well as financial resources for research in the Czech Republic and the European Union. It also covers the possibilities and key principles of commercializing the scientific outputs.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
Students work on individual projects focused on searching scientific databases on the internet. The projects are evaluated and discussed with the students.
Submission and presentation of the projects are mandatory.
Aims
The goal of the course is to provide students with orientation in the creation of technical and scientific texts, basic terminology in the fields of science and research, and methods of financing science and research in the Czech Republic. The student will be able to discuss the issue of evaluating scientific work and will be capable of independently searching for necessary information in scientific databases (Web of Science, Scopus). Furthermore, the student will be able to analyze a scientific article into its essential components and apply this skill in practice, for example, when writing their own publications, technical reports, etc. Additionally, they will be familiar with research funding in the Czech Republic and the EU and the basics of commercializing scientific outputs.

Project

Syllabus
Proposal of a topic for a future thesis and preparation of a literature review using relevant professional sources, including an abstract, introduction, selected chapters and a list of references. Both the content and the formal aspect of the submitted thesis, the originality of the chosen topic, the correctness and feasibility of the research questions are evaluated.
