Course detail
Vehicular Multimedia
FEKT-MPA-VHMAcad. year: 2025/2026
Students become familiar with fundamentals of digital communication and multimedia systems used in automobiles. In the first part of the course emphasis is put on explanation of the principle of source codecs and their practical application. Attention is devoted to the fundamental principles of analog and digital signal processing as well as the function of audio amplifiers and loudspeakers, and displays of images and video signals. In the second part of the course, the advanced and perspective wireless and multimedia systems (5G, 6G, IoT, M2M, WLAN, LPWAN, Bluetooth, UWB, LTE, DVB-T2/T2-Lite, DAB+ and DMB) are described.

Entry knowledge
Student registering for the course should be able to explain the basic principles of digital signal processing and data communication, express signals in time and frequency domains and have basic knowledge about linear and nonlinear circuits. Generally, the knowledge of the Bachelor's degree level is required.
Work in the laboratory is conditional on a valid qualification of a "worker knowledgeable for independent activity" according to the Decree No. 50/1978 Coll., which students must obtain before starting the course. Information on this qualification is given in the Dean's Directive on familiarization of students with safety regulations.
Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
The content and forms of ;instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
Aims
The graduate is able to:
- describe wireless communication and multimedia system, used in automobiles, and explain the function of blocks
- explain and apply the tools of audio, image and video compression codecs
- describe the used methods of source coding, channel coding and modulations
- describe architecture of WLAN (IEEE 802.11), WPAN (Bluetooth, ZigBee, UWB), LPWAN (LoRa, SigFox), M2M, ITS, DVB-T2, FM and DAB+ and explain methods of signal processing in these systems
- describe classes and characteristics of amplifiers and receivers used in automobiles
- describe displays used in cars (LED displays, HUD, holographic displays)
- define and explain Infotainment (operating systems, services, future for infotainment in smart mobility).
