Course detail

Practical Metrology

FSI-XPTAcad. year: 2025/2026

This is a course in Engineering Metrology. The course introduces students to metrology in the Czech Republic, the EU and the world, as well as to the principles of measurement with an emphasis on the practical aspect of checking dimensions, distances, geometric tolerances and surface texture evaluation. Special emphasis is given to the problems of 3D measurement and software support of metrological processes in the ISO GPS system.

Language of instruction

Czech

Number of ECTS credits

5

Mode of study

Not applicable.

Entry knowledge

Basic knowledge of engineering, mathematics and basic statistics.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Participation in the exercises, the correctness of the calculations and the student's activity in their processing are prerequisites for the award of credit points.
The examination consists of a written and an oral part. It will be graded according to the ECTS classification level.
Lectures are optional but recommended. Missed laboratory classes can be made up in another study group by arrangement with the teacher of that group or, if excused, at the end of the semester in make-up laboratory classes.

Aims

To introduce students to the concepts of metrology and the procedures for the use and selection of measuring instruments and measurement methods.
To teach students the principles of evaluating the applicability and capability of measuring instruments for the required tolerance of geometric characteristics of products.
Theoretical knowledge of metrology from lectures. Practical knowledge of measurement from exercises, processing of values of measured quantities in accordance with geometric requirements for products (ISO GPS). Practical experience with CMM programming.
