Information Systems Management

The course focuses on the following topics: The historical development of information systems and their categories. Data modelling. Function modelling. Database systems. Computer hardware. Computer networks. Corporate information strategy. Strategic management of information systems. Efficiency of information systems and metrics. Development of information systems. Planning the development of an IS. IS management. IS security. The subject focuses on risk. The student will be able to identify and analyse risks, and evaluate solutions at companies and institutions from the ICT point of view.

Competence in MS Office and fundamental knowledge in the field of database systems are expected.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Conditions for obtaining the course-unit credit:
1. Active participation in practical lessons, working through exercises which are assessed by the teacher – max. 12 points.
2. Successful completion of a semestral project by an assigned deadline – max. 10 points.
3. The total number of points must be higher than 15 in order to obtain the course unit credit.
Conditions for passing the exam: Knowledge of the taught topics and their practical application.
Form of examination: Combined – written test and oral examination.

The results of independent work on specified tasks are checked. In the case of an excused absence from a seminar, the teacher can set an additional condition, if appropriate. This is usually the completion of an additional written assignment.

Aims

The main objective of the course is to provide students with the fundamental theoretical knowledge necessary for the management of corporate IS. It is necessary to understand the trends in IS development and the substance of up to-date information technologies, and to understand strategic management issues in the field of IS. Students need to understand how an information system may be used to gain strategic advantage, and to be able to identify and master the solution of questions related to IS efficiency, and its measurement. They should also know how to analyse the suitability for application of different IS types in a company, and understand the fundamental principles of security policy in the field of IS.
Students will have a clear idea of modern methods of strategic management in the field of corporate IS and will become familiar with modern types of information technology.
They will acquire the basic knowledge necessary for the creation of an information strategy and for the evaluation of IS efficiency. Students will be able to define the optimal version of a new IS by means of suitable metrics and define a Service Level Agreement for outsourcing in the field of IS. They will learn how to actively create a corporate security policy in the field of IS and will be able to play an active part in the realization of IS development projects and their management.
