Applied Ecology

The subject's aim is to offer fundamental knowledge of the natural environment and of the laws of its development. The fundamental terms of ecology are explained. Getting acquainted with the basic acts on the protection of nature, landscape and the environment. Distinguishing the most current woody species which the architect and urban planner encounters. Preparation for negotiation with specialists in the process of land use planning.
The subject does not cover ecological buildings, landscape development and garden architecture which are taught in other mostly optional subjects in later years of study.
The classes (tutorials) include ecological mapping in an area of 1 km2 , and half day scientific excursions in the environs of Brno dedicated to the discussion in a real landscape of the topics dealt with in the lectures.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Basic orientation in the landscape, understanding the complexity of nature, recognition of man's basic interference in the landscape. Ability to recognise the main woody species which the architect and the urban planner meet in their practice. Overview of legislation concerning nature protection, and of its contents. Knowledge of problems of the space systemas of landsape's ecological stability. Overview of the significance of the Czech landscape and its individual parts in (Central) European context.

Level of kowledge of Faculty of Achitecture graduate.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credit is conditioned by ecological landscape mapping of an area of 1km2, working out a report including taken over documents, map as result of mapping, and photographic documentation. Each student selects an area according to his interest, however, it must not overlap with an area that is mapped by another student. In the first term, the examination has a written form, in case of retake, or absence from written examination, next term examination
is exclusively oral. The resulting classification depends on the result of examination (70 %), quality of submitted work (20%) and the student's activity at tutorials and study visit.
