Learning outcomes of the course unit

Basic overview of style periods, prominent artists, art societies and foreign contacts encountered on the Czech creative art scene in the first half of the 20th century.

Prerequisites

Lectures on the development of architecture and history of graphic and plastic art, delivered under the bachelor degree study program.

Written test, in idividual cases completed with an interview.

Course curriculum

The cycle of lectures deals with the basic subject matters: Secession in the works of the generation of the nineties; founders of the Czech modern art associated in the guilds Osma
(Eight) and Group of creative artists; civilism, primitivism and social trends in post-war painting and sculpture; avant-gard role of the Devětsil Artists Union; surrealism and the Surrealist group, the Seven in October Association, Group 42 and Ra during the country's Nazi occupation.

Aims

In the first half of the 20th century had formed the tradition of modern Czech graphic and plastic art culture from which contemporary Czech painiting and sculpture drive. In many cases, creative art developed in close cooperation with architecture; therefore the knowledge of graphic and plastic art is indispensable for students of architecture.
