Structural Engineering III

FA-PS3Acad. year: 2009/2010

Study of structures that affect the function of the building in its underground and ground part. Waterproofing systems, fillings of openings, lightweight and traditional wall structures, traditional and large-span roof structures and partition walls. Structures which affect the quality of the interior, e.g. floor structures, lining, ceilings.. The aim is to gain knowledge enabling to design an optimum and theoretically justified formation of a structural detail.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

In the framework of the subject Building construction III, the student gains the knowledge of structures belonging to the finishing building trades. In a series of assignments that have to be worked out in form of drawings, the student gets acquainted with the basic relationships between various building structures. He or she gains and develops the technical
skills and abilities to make a justified and correct architectureal design.

Prerequisites

In the subject Building construction III, it is expected that the student has completed the study of the subjects Building construction I and II. Even if the student has not yet passed the respective examinations, this does not hinder him or her to complete the study of the subject Building construction III. For successful study, it is regarded as appropriate that the student continually folows up professinal journals and books dealing with building construction and architecture. Beneficial is also orientation in foreign study materials.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The student has to attend at least 10 tutorials. It is the student's duty to work out all tutorial assignments under conditions defined before the beginning of the semester. The student has to pass a test in which is checked his or her understanding of the subject matter, and ability to apply the knowledge gained.
After being granted credit, the student is qualified for examination. The examination has a written form, and is divided into two parts, that contain assignments relating to the taught subject matter.

Aims

Building construction belongs to the basic technical subjects which introduce the students to the problems of designing residential, public, agricutlural and industrial buildings. In interconnection with various technical and scientific disciplines, this discipline is the basis for designing a work of architecture. The subject's primary objective is to provide the students with the knowledge and skills needed for the the solution of an optimum and theoretically justified design of a structural element.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at tutorials is monitored. It is the student's duty to attend a prescribed number of tutorials. The student can pass a current test. Submitted worked out assignments are also checked and their technical quality and graphic standard are monitored.
