General English I

Orientation in major areas of English grammar (present simple and continuous, past simple and continuous, present perfect simple, articles, can/can´t/to be able to, relative clauses, adjectives - comparatives and superlatives), proper use of dictionary and vocabulary building. Scanning and skimming, guided writing, essay, letter. Listening for both general understanding and specific information. Mastering the basic conversational topics, e.g. "Meeting people, Family, Everyday situations, Human personality etc."

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Ability of students to communicate orally and on paper (essay writing), extension of grammar knowledge and vocabulary; development of reading (skimming, scanning), listening and speaking skills based on pre-intermediate entrance level.

Grammar, vocabulary and language skills at the "beginner" level

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

During the semester students will work actively in seminars. They will also hand in assessed essays. Both the above will represent the necessary prerequisites for sitting for the final test whose successful completion will entitle students to be awarded the course-unit credit.

Aims

Extension of vocabulary, grammar knowledge and development of reading, writing, listening and conversational skills aimed on preparation to enter the "English for Chemists" course

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students hand in individually completed tasks and exercises according to the subject syllabus. They write an essay on an assigned topic.Attendance at organized seminars is systematically controlled, for the students with English mastered at levels higher than the General English I absences at seminars can be compensated by successful completion of the final test.
