Offered to foreign students

Of all faculties

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Laboratory equipment and glassware handling.
Synthesis of organic compounds in laboratory scale.
Health and safety at work in a chemical laboratory.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic laboratory practices and techniques (recrystallization, distillation, extraction, etc.).

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Finish 10 laboratories at least, submit lab. reports and prepared compounds during the term.
Pass test(s) about practical and theoretical knowledges.

Course curriculum

Students are briefed by organization of laboratory and syntheses in detail during the first lab. Safety training is also realized. Students realize at least 10 syntheses of the following:
1. 2-Nitrophenol a 4-nitrophenol (1) (SEAr mechanism, steam distillation, recrystallization)
2. Ethylbromide a tert-butylchloride (2) (SN mechanism, simple distillation)
3. Ethyl acetate (3) (esterification, simple distillation)
4. Anthranilic acid (4) (Hofmann degradation of amides, recrystallization)
5. Benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol (5) (Cannizzaro reaction, extraction, vacuum distillation)
6. 2-Chlorobenzoic acid (6) (diazotation and Sandmeyer reaction, recrystallization)
7. tert-Butyl alcohol and other tertiary alcohols (12) (Grignard reagent, AN to carbonyl group, extraction, simple distillation)
8. Acetanilide (9) (acetyl derivates of amines, reflux, recrystallization)
9. Orange II (18) (diazotation and copulation, recrystallization)
10. Sulfanilic acid (4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid) (16) (SEAr mechanism, reflux, recrystallization)
11. Anhydride of cyclohex-4-ene-cis-dicarboxylic acid and Cyclohex-4-ene-cis-1,2-dicarboxylic acid (mechanism of Diels-Alder's reaction)
12. 4,4-Dimethylcyklohex-2-en-1-one (Robinson annulation, azeotropic distillation, vacuum distillation)
Labs at last week of the term are substitute for unqualified or sick students during the term.
