Laboratory Classes in Coloristics and Colorimetrics

Evaluation of the influence of chemical composition of substantive dyes on hue on the base of theory of colours. ( The work with Colour Index ) Construction of absorbance and transmitance spectra of dyes. Influence of the dye concentration and electrolyte concentration on the maximal characteristic wavelength. The determination of the molar absorption index of dyes. Verification of colorimetric determination of substances in mixed solutions. Colorimetric assessment of dye concentration in the solution. Verification the dependences A/c =f(L) and T =f(L). Determination of chromaticity coordinates x, y, z; trichromatic parts X, Y, Z ; colour coordinates a, b and chroma C, hue H. TLC chromatography of dyes in the different inks. Herbaceous dyes extraction. Chromatographic determination of chlorophyles in spinach by TLC method. Photometric determination of chlorophyles. TLC chromatography of beta-carottene and other dyes in red paprika. Whiteness of substrates with fluorescent brightening agents. Determination of paper brightness W457. Yelow index and opacity of paper. Silk painting. Transfer printing with pigments. Paper chromatography of cartridge pens and markers. Determination of chromaticity of colour papers. Dyes mixing. Visible spectroscopy of dyes in solution.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of Lambert/Beer(,)s law, spectrophotometric UV/VIS wavelength, colourness theory of substances, basic knowledge of general chemistry and chemical calculations.

Course curriculum

The influence of chemical composition and constitution of substantive dyes on the hue and classification of colorants by C.I. generic name and number. Matematical statement of colour space.
2. Reflection curves of colour surfaces. Determination of colour coordinates for CIE chromacity diagram.
3. Lambert-Beer(,)s law in coloristic practice.
4. Determination of molar extinction coefficient of dye.
5. Influence of presence of electrolyte in dye solution on maximal characteristic wavelength of absorption and absorbance of dye solution .
6. Influence of the concentration solution with two and more dye mixtures.
7. Dependence of absorbance of dye and transmitance index on thickness of the cuvette.
8. Optical properties of different sort of papers.
