Course detail

Laboratory Classes in Plasma Chemistry

FCH-MC_PLA_PAcad. year: 2009/2010

Practical course offers to students real and informal experience with different kinds of plasmas, their properties, diagnostics in laboratory/research as well as in real technological applications. The tasks contain atmospheric and low pressure systems in gases and liquids. The plasma diagnostics is done by optical emission spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy and by measurements of electric characteristics. The tasks are also devoted to surface treatment by plasma, liquid phase processes initiated by electrical discharge and ozone generation.

Mode of study

Not applicable.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students obtain practice knowledge with plasmachemistry background, plasma diagnostics and with selected plasmachemical applications and technologies in laboratory scale, too.

Prerequisites

Practice couses from inorganic and physical chemistry and practical course from physics.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Working group gives one protocol form each practical task together. The classification is dependent on the average protocol level and also on the work during the exercises.

Course curriculum

List of tasks:
1. Low pressure measuring
2. EPR spectroscopy of plasma
3. Optical emission spectroscopy of plasma
4. Changes of polymer materials wettability by surface discharge
5. Permeability enhancement of non-wowen textile materials
6. Electric characteristics of diaphragm discharge ignition
7. Hydrogen peroxide generation by diaphragm discharge in liquids
8. Organic dyes degradation by diaphragm discharge in liquids
9. Study of ozone generation

Not applicable.

Aims

The course gives the practice knowledge in plasmachemistry background, plasma diagnostics and with some plasmachemical applications and technologies, too.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance is required and preparedness for independent working on the experiment is checked by teacher. Students work in small groups (usually two students).
