Communication Theory

Communication systems, basic terms focused on digital modulations. Classification of modulating techniques. Base-band discrete coded modulations. Signal patterns for digital data representation. Intersymbol interference and its reduction. Discrete modulations with harmonic carrier. Main parameters and geometric representation of modulated signals. BFSK, BPSK, D-BPSK, MPSK, QPSK, D-QPSK, O-QPSK, p/4 - QPSK modulations. CPM (CPFSK, MSK, GMSK). M-QAM techniques. Modulating formats with multiple carriers MCM, orthogonal frequency multiplex OFDM. Techniques of reconstruction of reference carrier and time raster for digital modulations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Study evaluation is based on marks obtained for specified items. Minimimum number of marks to pass is 50.

Taking part in all the forms of practical training. Passing the workbooks in a specified quality and form.

  • Basic terms of the theory of communication and data transmission.
  • Communication systems focused on digital modulations. Classification of modulating techniques.
  • Base-band discrete coded modulations.
  • Signal formats for digital data representation. Intersymbol interference (ISI) and its reduction.
  • Digital data filtering. SNR maximization.
  • Two-stage and more-stage discrete modulations with harmonic carriers.
  • Geometric representation of modulated signals. Main groups of digital modulations.
  • BFSK, BPSK, D-BPSK modulations.
  • MPSK, QPSK, D-QPSK, O-QPSK, pi/4 - QPSK modulations.
  • CPM (CPFSK, MSK, GMSK) modulation. M-QAM modulations.
  • Modulating formats with multiple carriers MCM, orthogonal frequency multiplex OFDM.
  • Techniques of reconstruction of reference carrier and time raster for digital modulations.

Aims

To elaborate actual and to acquire more of the knowledge about the current modern methods of transmission of communication and data signals in base-band and radio-channels.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Concurrent checking of workbooks in the laboratory and computer practice.
