Psychology in Healthcare

The course is devided into four basic components. In the first one, students will be given fundamental knowledge of disciplines of psychology, psychological terminology and psychlogical way of thinking. In the second one, stress factors and managing the pressure will be discussed. In the third one, students will be given information on the issue of disease and health. And in the fourth one, some fields of medical psychology will be discussed - e.g. how to behave to patients, the right way of interviewing patients, aspects of clinical categories of fear, anxiety, aggressiveness etc.

Oral exam - range of knowledge according to series of lectures and recommended literature required.

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified ¨ in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Course curriculum

Introduction to psychology, stress and managing pressure, psychology of health, psychology of disease, medical psychology - aspects of the doctor-patient interaction, interviewing the patient and close relatives, psychological care about out- and in-patients, psychological aspects of approach to pain and psychosomatic diseases, anxiety and fear, aggressiveness, dying, death and sorrow.

Aims

Giving further information on psychology, improving students´adaptation on medical environment, giving knowledge of psychology and related skills of the kind to be capable of making decisions relating to medical enviroment.

1. Introduction to psychology - fundamentals of cognitive psychology, psychology of emotions and motivation, social psychology, individuality psychology.
2. Stress and managing pressure - frustration, kinds of defence mechanism, burn-out syndrom.
3. Psychology of health, psychology of disease.
4. Medical psychology - aspects of the doctor-patient interaction, interviewing the patient and close relatives, psychological care about out- and in-patients, psychological aspects of approach to pain and psychosomatic diseases, anxiety and fear, aggressiveness, dying, death and sorrow.
