Materials for Building Insulation

Thermal insulation of peripheral structures according to its constructional system (one-layer, double-layer, sandwich and pre-assembled). Design principles for thermal insulation of roofs according to their constructional system (one-layer, double-layer, sandwich and pre-assembled). Design principles for waterproofing based on bitumen, foil and liquid foil membranes for subterranean and aerial parts of the building. Design of wall and ceiling acoustic insulation. Special fire-stopping insulations.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Detailed knowledge about various insulation techniques in building construction - thermal insulation of vertical structures, sloping and flat roofs, waterproof of subterranean parts and roofs.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of building construction solutions abreast civil engineer. Knowledge from building physics area – thermal moisture building analysis, single and multidimensional solution of thermal and moisture flow. Aerial and impact noise insulation design.

Course curriculum

1. Division of thermal insulations according to usability in building construction structures.
2. Thermal insulation from mineral and glass fibers
3. Thermal insulation from plastics (polystyrene, polyurethane, isocyanurate)
4. Thermal insulation from cellular glass
5. Thermal insulation form polyesthere, cotton, sheep-wool, woody trash, coconut fibers and grass and corn fibers, thermal insulation from transparent materials
6. Waterproofing from bitumen membranes – modification, bearing inlays, surface finish, ways of application and joining
7. Waterproofing from thermoplastic, elastomer and thermoplastic-elastomer membranes – materials, bearing inlays, ways of application and joining, linkage to foil panels
8. Waterproofing based on spraying, slicing, cylindring and pouring. Usability and technological principles of application.
9. Anti-radon insulation – materials, application and calculation
10. Acoustic insulation – division, materials and usage in structures
11. Special fire-stopping insulations – design, material and usage
12. Excursion
13. Summary and conclusion

Detailed knowledge about various insulation techniques in building construction (thermal insulation of interior and exterior vertical structures, thermal insulation of sloping and flat roofs, waterproof of subterranean parts and roofs, anti-radon insulation, acoustic insulation, fire-stopping insulation).
