Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students become familiar with the recent communication systems for data, audio and video signals transmission and with basic methods of signal processing using in these systems such as source and channel coding, synchronization or modulation.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required.

1. Subdivision and typical structures of communication systems.
2. Source coding of speech, audio, video and digital data. Cryptography.
3. Channel coding. Linear codes. Hamming, cyclic and convolutional codes.
4. Baseband modulation and detection. Line codes.
5. Matched filter. Inter-symbol interference. Equalisation.
6. Bandpass modulation. Analog and digital modulation.
7. Multiple access systems. Multiplexing techniques.
8. Communication channel. Noise and fading channel. Diversity receiving systems.
9. Carrier frequency and phase synchronization. Symbol and frame synchronization.
10. Telephone and radio telephone systems. DSL and ISDN technology.
11. Wireless data communication WLAN, WPAN, WWAN. Analogue radio and TV broadcasting.
12. DAB and DVB. Satellite communications. Optical communication systems.
13. Core- and access data networks. Networking devices. Transmission protocols.

Aims

The aim of the course is to make students familiar with the recent communication systems for data, audio and video signals transmission and with basic methods of signal processing using in these systems such as source and channel coding, synchronization or modulation.

Theoretical fundamentals of communications. Theory of information. Channel capacity.
Components of communication systems.
Digital and analogue communication signals. Source coding. Adaptive prediction, Huffman code. Fundamentals of the audio and video compression.
Fundamentals of cryptography. Channel coding. Error correcting and detecting codes, redundancy. Cyclic, Hamming and convolutional codes. Turbo codes.
Baseband pulse transmission. Line coding. Synchronnous and asynchronnous transfer mode.
Passband data transmission. Amplitude and phase modulations.
Fundamentals of digital modulations FSK, ASK, PSK, QAM, MSK. Correlation coding. Matched filter. Carrier and symbol timming recovery.
Multiple-access techniques (FDMA, TDMA, CDMA). OFDM.
Fundamentals of spread-spectrum techniques. FH and DS systems.
Audio and video signal transmission. Telephone network. Radio and TV broadcasting.
Data Transmission. Telephone service, ISDN, AHDL. Wireless systems (trunking systems, WLL systems, point-to-multipoint systems). Terresterial Digital Audio Broadcasting (T-DAB, DVB).
Optical communication systems, modulation techniques.
Satelite communications. Local area networks.
