Network inteconnection elements - hubs, switches, routers. Routing techniques. Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, DQDB. VLANS, LANE. IPX/SPX protocol set. TCP/IP protocol set. Internet, e-mail, telnet, ftp. WWW - HTTP, HTML language. Network security. Network administration.

Students will get knowledge from the area of principles of computer networks, protocol sets, properties of various types of LANs, MANs, WANs.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

- 2 tests within laboratories - 15 points each (30 points maximum)

Aims

The goal is to pass to students enough information about computer networks, means of network communication, network administration, about the Internet and its services.

Syllabus

Telecommunication networks - classification, characteristics of specialized networks, development towards networks with integrated services. Communication services - division, demands, service description. Network and services integration - reasons, conditions, data transmission techniques.
Summary of OSI reference model properties - layers, their functions. Connection oriented and connectionless services, reliable and unreliable services. Types of connection - circuit switching, data units switching.
Cabling systems. Data encoding. Common transmission capacity sharing. Computer networks - characteristics, LANs - types, features, topologies, access methods, network elements. Peer-to-peer and server-client networks. Network applications.
LAN interconnection elements - repeaters, HUBs, bridges, switches, routers, gateways. Types of routing in LANs and WANs.
ETHERNET - 10 Mb/s, 100 Mb/s, 1000 Mb/s - description, access method, standards, network cards, frames. Token Ring, FDDI, DQDB. Wireless LANs.
Virtual LANs - types, administration.
Remote access - POTN, ISDN, mobile network, high speed digital subscriber circuits - ADSL, HDSL, VDSL, SDSL, wireless access - FWA networks. Link protocol - PPP, MPPP.
Reference model TCP/IP - description, addressing, protocols ARP, BOOTP, DHCP, domain name system DNS.
Routing protocols RIP, OSPF, IP, ICMP. Transport protocols - TCP, UDP.
Application protocols - Telnet, FTP, e-mail SMTP. Internet structure, IP address and name domain allocation, multimedia information on the Internet.
WWW - HTTP, HTML.
Service integration into IP networks - QoS introduction, protocol sets H.323 and SIP, IP telephony.
