Multimedia signals and data

Elements of acoustic and visual perception. Image and acoustic data, objective and subjective quality. Properties of biomedical image data. Special methods of multimedia signal processing: image, audio- and video data, particularly processing, enhancement and analysis of image data. Methods and standards of lossless and lossy compression of image, audio and video data.

Basic knowledge on particularly biomedical multimedia data characteristics, their perception, processing, analysis, transmission and archiving, in information systems and with respect to Internet applications

Course curriculum

1. Multimedia signals and data, definitions and properties
2. Theory of multidimensional signals and systems - original domain and frequency domain
3. Multidimensional unitary transforms and their properties
4. Models of psychophysiology of human sight and hearing
5. Properties of biomedical image data (X-ray, CT, MRI, SPECT, PET)
6. Enhancement of images - contrast and colour transforms, geometrical transforms
7.Enhancement of images - sharpening and noise reduction. Principles of image restoration
8. Basics of image analysis - segmentation, texture analysis, time-development and motion analysis
10. Particularities of acoustic signal processing
11. Principles of multimedial data compression
12. Image and video data compression, properties and parameters
13. Acoustic data compression, properties and parameters

Gaining basic knowledge on multimedia signals and data, used in medicine, their relation to perception, corresponding technical characteristics, methods of processing, analysis and preparation for archiving or communication via data networks
