CAD in Communication Subsystems

Very high frequency and microwave communication systems. Propagation of electromagnetic waves in free space. Basic types of RF and MW transmission lines and its properties. Design and simulation of planar filters. Power dividers power combiners, RF switches, directional couplers - design and simulation. Basics of UHF and MW antennas. Horn, reflector and planar antennas. Its properties, design and simulation. Linear amplifiers, nonlinear circuits.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Student can obtain up to 45 points for activities in computer labs. An individual project is honored by 25 points (maximally), and the final test can be honored by up to 30 points.

1) Propagation of EM waves. Introduction to Ansoft HFSS.
2) RF transmission lines.
3) Basic types of microwave antennas.
4) Reflector antennas. Parabolic antennas - properties of feed system.
5) Directional couplers, power dividers and combiners.
6) Lowpass filters.
7) Bandpass filters.
8) Linear amplifiers. Low noise preamplifiers.
9) Nonlinear circuits. Frequency multipliers, mixers.
10) Optimization.
11) Individual projects.

Introduction to design and modeling of RF components of a communication chain in commercial software.
