Computers and Programming 1

Architecture of computers - controller, operating memory, instruction, representation and coding of information. Operational systems - proces, running a proces, types of operational systems, multitasking, MS Windows and UNIX, basic characteristics. Information transfer - LAN, WAN, Intranet, Internet, Ethernet, topologies of local networks, technique of transfer. Communication protocols - data transfer in Internet, protocol layers, TCP/IP protocol, European networks TEN-34, TEN-155. Internet services - ping, telnet, ftp, e-mail, news, web, HTML language. Introduction to programming I - basic data types, algorithmization, program structure, basic statements of C. Database systems - basic operations with a database, structure of a modern database system, types of database systems. PC hardware - buses, procesors, operating memory, hard drives, interfaces, extension cards.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will learn internal hardware architecture of personal computers and architecture of used operational systems. Students will also learn of basic of Internet including web design and fundamentals of programming in C.

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required.

Aims

The aim is to introduce students to computer science including its practical use. The subject deals with description of hardware and software of personal computers and fundamentals of algorithmization and programming.
