Studio control desk, its main parts, description of operation. General properties of acoustic signals and their transformation. Peripherals of studio control desk, effect tools for digital signal processing. Electronic devices used in the production of musical recordings. Basics of music acoustics, tuning, creation of primary actave. Music synthesis, principles, history. Analog, analog-digital and digital synthesizers, types of synthesis. MIDI communication system. Visualisation of acoustic signals. Multichannel sound systems. Digital audio interfaces, synchronization protocols. Computer aided processing of acoustic signals, hard disc recording.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will become familiar with the principles and basic methods of how to work with studio devices and their peripherals, including selected electronic musical instruments, with computer systems for digital audio signal recording and processing, with methods of synchronizing studio equipment and with multichannel sound systems.

Prerequisites

Basic laws and quantities in electrical circuits, properties of elements of the electrical circuits. Continuous-time signals and systems, analysis and characteristics of linear systems, periodical and non-periodical signal spectrum. Measurement instruments for electrical quantities, measurement of quantity time behaviour using oscilloscope.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
- Lectures provide the explanation of basic principles, subject methodology, examples of problems and their solutions.
- Laboratory exercises support practical acquiring of themes presented at lectures. Active participation of students is needed.
Participation at lectures is recommended. Participation at other ways of instruction is checked.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of study results follows Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and Dean's Regulation to the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. Up to 29 points is given for five students' independent work, up to 16 points is given for two laboratory practices and their elaboration, and up to 55 points is given or final written examination. The minimal scale of elaboration of particular laboratory exercises are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantee of the course and updated for every academic year.

Aims

The aim of the course is to make students familiar with the chain of acoustic signal processing for musical recordings and technical realization of this chain, with electronic musical instruments and modern digital studio equipment.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

It is mandatory to pass all laboratory exercises in regular or alternative terms and submit all independent work to complete the course. Other forms of the checked instructions are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantee of the course and updated for every academic year.
