Mobile network terminals - operational principles and architectures of mobile networks, services - voice communication, messaging, data services - CSD, HSCSD, E/GPRS. Communication security, authentication, data encryption. Architectures of mobile terminals.
Voice and videoconversation services integration into IP networks - H.323 and SIP architectures. VoIP communication procedures, QoS support. Voice and video IP terminals structures - HW and SW components.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Knowledge from the area of terminal equipments, like telephone sets - analog, system dependent digital ones, ISDN, cordless (CT1, DECT), mobile phones, pay-phones; facsimile machines and faxmodem cards; answering machines, voice mail, etc.

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

- 2 tests within laboratories - 10 points each (20 points maximum)
- final written examination - 80 points max.

4. Facsimile terminals - operation, block structure, scanning and printing techniques, document encoding techniques, data formats,
5. Facsimile transmission modes, facsimile communication phases and procedures,
6. ISDN terminals - ISDN network architecture, types of ISDN access, R, S, T, U interfaces,
7. Non-ISDN terminal access, terminal power feeding, DSS1 signalling system.
8. ISDN terminal structure, ISDN phone, facsimile and data services in ISDN network, videocommunication in ISDN,

Aims

The goal of this course is to allow students to get high level of knowledge about terminal equipments, about their structure, operation, and services provided by these terminals. During laboratory exercises student can practise working with samples of various types of terminal equipment.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.

Syllabus

Terminal equipment - functions, position in communication system, structure, operation description of main blocks. Telephone set - block diagram, block operations, types of telephone sets.
Basic signalling for telephone connection establishment, supplementary signalling tones. Speech circuits - hybrid circuits, microphones and speakers, electronic speech circuits. Ringers - types, principal of electronic acoustic ringers. Diallers - types, pulse and tone dialling, mixed diallers. DTMF decoders. Loudspeaker telephones. Protection circuits.
Answering machines - connection to the line together with telephone set, types of recording, functions, TOLL-SAVER. Cordless telephones - modulations, frequency bands, security protection, advantages and disadvantages, DECT system.
Tarifikators - goal, block diagrams of tarifikation symbol transmitters and receivers, requirements, telephone announcers.
Pay-phones - types, main parts and their functions. Telkor TSA-4 - main parts, diagnostics, operation and maintenace centre. Identification cards - usage, types, features. Smart cards - types, contacts.
Facsimile transmission - principal, transmitter and receiver, main blocks description. Image scanning. CCD sensors - principal, features, characteristics, blooming effect. Image synthesis - types, their description.
Faximile machine groups, characteristics. One-dimensional and two-dimensional image encoding, data structures.
Connection phases, types of signalling. Connection phases of machines with tonal signalling. Binary encoded signalling - message format, phase description of G3 apparatuses. Polling, multipage transmission, transmission mode exchange. ECM - basic procedures, solution of erroneous transmission.
Modems - function, position in communication system, interfaces. Types of data transmission, communication protocols. AT command sets, return codes, status registers. MNP protocols, internal and external modems, connection phases description.
ISDN terminals - services, types. Basic rate access, communication channels, S and U inteerfaces, network temination. Power feeding of NT and terminals.
Terminal access to the D-channel. Link layer of DSS1 - frame fomat, SAPI, TEI. Message layer of DSS1 - message types, structure, signalling messages during connection course. ISDN terminal structure - interface circuits, telephones, facsimile machines, ISDN cards, videocommunication.
Mobile terminals - services, telephones, modems, communicators, voice and data encoding and error protection.
Computer as a terminal equipment of telecommunication network - network interfaces, drivers, OS support for communication, protocols, applications
Terminals for XoIP services - IP phones, videoterminals
