Introduction into automation system design. Design phases, models of design works. Design documentation. Large Scale technological systems - mathematics modeling. Verification and validation of models. Problems of numeric aspects of modeling. Case studies. Standard IEC 61508 of Functional Safety. Connection of sensors to inputs of PLC and DCS. Noisy, passive and active noisy protection. MS Project.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Knowledge of automation system design with attention to real time (RT) systems. Knowledge of measurement devices and systems design.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested.

Course curriculum

Introduction into design of automation systems. Project phases, models of design live cycle. Design conventions, case study of heat exchanger station design. Automation system design as a technical - economical problem. Project documentation. Design SW tools.
Mathematic modelling of large automated systems.
Quantitative and qualitative modelling. Project of an electrical power plant. A case study. Methods of interconnection of sensors to input modules of DCS and PLC.

InTouch csreen for filling and emptying a tank
HW configuration for PLC control of a dairy plant

Aims

The aim of the subject is to introduce the students to large process automation problems. Students will be introduced into the automation system design, safe standards, design standards and design procedures by design of control systems. The subject contains also computer aided design of control systems. One part of the subject is excursions into technological processes. Laboratories deal with PC oriented DCS and noise immunity. The last part of the subject deals with methods of sensor connection and teh Functional safety standard IEC 61508.
