The exam is of an intermediate level (B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) which requires a student to:
-generally understand information about familiar topics and situations, such as those met at work, at school, free time etc. providing they are expressed in a clear and straightforward manner.
- be able to use Spanish to communicate successfully in most situations encountered when travelling abroad.
- be able to create a simple connected text with a simple context.
- be able to describe experiences and events, ambitions, hopes and plans, and to briefly explain or justify their ideas and statements.
- successfully complete intermediate level grammar exercises.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student who has passed this exam will have demonstrated an intermediate level of Spanish language ability as described by the B1 level of the CEF (Common European Framework) established by the Council of Europe.

Prerequisites

Entry level B1. Students should be able to use the following grammar rules properly: conjugation of verbs, past tense simple, past tense imperfect; to form adverbs, commands, 1st conditional, pronouns direct object, indirect object, reflexives, reported speech, know the rules for cojugation of irregular verbs, use condictional simple, date; to express the time, numerals, prepositions, dates; to write properly in Spanish; to use correct stress and intonation while speaking. They should also be able to introduce themselves, talk about their family, school, job, free time etc. with sufficient vocabulary. They should be able to communicate and react in the following areas: transport, shopping, appearance, characteristics of people, travelling, weather, health, sport etc.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam at B1 level consists of grammar, vocabulary, writting, listening comprehension (written test) and the oral part. The whole exams is scheduled for 2 and 15 minutes. The oral part generally takes place in pairs - students ask and answer each other questions in prior settled by the examiner, discuss a given topic and also speak individually eventually with the examiner (according to the number of students)

In order to prepare for this exam, the optional subjects BYS5 and BYS6 are offered by the Department of Languages.
