Learning outcomes of the course unit

Design of machine parts and mechanisms, computational verification of designed machine parts, drives and mechanisms and evaluation of their reliability for the desired technical life.

Prerequisites

Students are assumed to have the knowledge of fundamentals of design, material science and mechanics of solids, which they have obtained in previous part of their study at FME BUT.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Final writen test consist of 10 teoretical qustion (5 points/question) and 5 practical examples (10 points/ example) Minimal number of points is 50 and maximal number of points is 100. Resulting classification is made according ECTS.

The aim of the course is for students to learn how to construct machine parts, drives, and mechanisms.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Participation in lectures is recommended, participation at seminars is checked and recorded - two absences are allowed.

1. Introduction to the mechanical engineering design. Failures resulting from static loading (ductile fracture).
2. Fatigue failure resulting from variable loading (fatigue fracture).
3. Shafts and axles. Joint for torque transmission.
4. Contact of solids. Friction, lubrication, and wear.
5. Bolted and riveted joints.
6. Welded and bonded joints.
7. Mechanical springs.
8. Rolling and journal bearings.
9. Drives. Gears. Spur gears and helical gears.
10. Bevel gears. Worm gears.
11. Drives with flexible mechanical elemants.
12. Cluthes and brakes. Flywheels.
13. Mechanisms.
