Life-cycle Assessment of Buildings

FAST-BHA048Ak. rok: 2024/2025

The subject is taught in English. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the assessment of environmental, social and economic impacts of buildings and construction products. In the course of the lectures, the general framework, specifics and evaluation options will be gradually introduced. In the beginning, students will learn about the general framework of assessment in accordance with valid standards and (international) legislation: mainly the Paris Agreement, the European Directive on the energy performance of buildings and renewable energy sources, the Green Deal or the Fit for 55 toolkit. This knowledge will be further extrapolated and applied to the field of construction. Students will become familiar with the standards and voluntary methodologies for evaluating buildings (ČSN EN 15978, Level(s), SBToolCZ, BREEAM, etc.) and building products (ČSN EN 15804, EPD, PEF, ESG, etc.). They will be introduced to the individual phases of the building's life cycle (production, construction, use, end of life), their interconnection and influence on the overall assessment of impacts. They will also be presented with examples of comparing the life cycle impacts of traditional building materials, constructions and energy sources and their natural and renewable alternatives. During the exercises, students will apply and practice the acquired theoretical knowledge on partial assignments. They will evaluate the specified products, optimize their production and use with regard to minimizing negative impacts. After completing the course, students will have the knowledge to assess the environmental, economic and socio-cultural impacts of buildings, construction structures and materials.

Učební cíle

Graduates of the course will have overview information on the assessment of environmental, economic and socio-cultural impacts of buildings, construction structures and materials: methods and purposes of assessment, setting of boundary conditions, methods of data collection and evaluation. Thanks to the acquired knowledge, graduates will find application in the processing of partial tasks in this field, from the evaluation of the impacts of a specific product to the comprehensive multi-criteria evaluation of a building in order to obtain a quality certificate.
