The human-machine interface is a phenomenon of time of rapidly increasing automation in technical practice. Recently, this interface is an integral part of complicated instruments whose operation requires great experience and trained staff. Hereby these devices become difficultly utilizable for the naive users. This paper describes the initial design of human-machine interface for devices for determining of position using satellite (GNSS) methods. The mathematical model of surveying process was developed using fuzzy logic within an analysis. The proposal is implemented by a system top-down analysis and links between the functional sub-components are described using a sequential scheme. The communication of the user with interface is expressed a hierarchical state machine in UML 2.0. The aim of interface is a simplifying of the complex setup process of GNSS devices. The core of solution is an expert system which is based on geographic information system (GIS). GIS simulates the measurement conditions in the given locality. The design of interface will be verified on the specific GNSS device, GRS-1 by Topcon Company
