The objective of this article is to introduce the principles and history of Black Market (referred to as BM), founded in 1985 as a way of collaborative work in the area of performance art. Since its beginning, it avoided a hierarchical group identity, and focused instead on creating conditions for meetings of artists and developing their individual performances in cooperation with other artists engaged in BM in the form of an open network. Now, after 30 years of BM's existence, the question has come to the focus how actually can their ephemeral performances be retrospectively understood. It is turning out that, apart from the description of BM's history itself, comprehension and theoretical reflection of its creative principles are important so as to define BM in a broader theoretical and historiographical context.
