The solar gains through the transparent surfaces of a building depend primarily on the total solar factor g, the size and orientation of the glazing. This means, that we can often see large areas of glazing that can (when correctly oriented) can provide large solar gains, but on the other hand are also the weakest point of the thermal insulation of the building envelope. Therefore it is advantageous to use computer simulations from early design stages to find the best solutions for minimizing the heat loses of designed buildings. With use of these simulations we can assess various solutions and ultimately choose the best. This paper uses computer simulations to monitor the effect of various heat transfer coefficients of glazing Ug in conjunction with the total solar transmittance g on the specific heat demand of a passive house. It also discusses the optimization of orientation of the glazing.
