WiMAX is the latest broadband wireless access (BWA) technology based on the IEEE 802.16 standard operating in the frequency range 10-66 GHz. Various extensions, namely 802.16a- for 2-11 GHz, 802.16c, 802.16d, 802.16REVd & 802.16e are in the pipeline. The standards define both the media access control and the physical layers. The WiMAX Forum supports the standardization process by taking care of testing and conformance issues for both IEEE 802.16 and ETSI HiperMAN standards. This paper aims at providing an overview of these standards and focuses on different design options available for the WiMAX air interface. The effect of these features on the attainable data rates is also discussed.
