In this paper we present Life-Cycle Assessment of 4 semi intensive green roof assemblies - one common assembly, one assembly with added extruded polystyrene for increased thermal resistance and two assemblies with hydrophilic mineral wool fulfilling roles of additional thermal insulation, water reservoir and partial substitute of substrate. We have created a 20-year cradle-to-grave model of these assemblies life cycle. Our goal was evaluation of influence of added man-made materials on their environmental impacts. We confirmed that addition of such materials increases environmental impacts during first stages of the assemblies' life cycle, but this increase later leads to reduction of environmental impacts during the use of the assemblies. According to our calculations the lowest environmental impacts are related to common green roof assembly without any replacement of substrate and the worst environmental impacts are related to assembly with added polystyrene panels. Hydrophilic mineral wool, if used correctly should increase the environmental impacts by less than 10 %, so even without including its other advantages (e.g. water retention potential) we can say that it is material suitable for green roofs, where it is (from the cradle-to-grave perspective) almost comparable to natural substrates.
