Design of Machine Tools Operating Graphics in Czechoslovakia from 1940s to Present

Article describes historical development of operating graphics of machine tools produced in Czechoslovakia, mainly in term 1947–1990. It is aimed especially at Machine Tools Factories producing graphical symbols placed on control panels of machine tools. These associated factories were managed by one research institute which had its own design department. For this research, historical and classification methods with added interviews were chosen. Many research materials were found in archives and photographical documentation was taken in factories, where these machine tools are still in use. Research included samples of main graphical symbols used on machine tools in given term, standardized symbols from present and author´s newly designed symbols. This retrospective allows preview into design process of shapes and graphics, which change thanks to the production possibilities, technical Standardization and industrial designers involved in this design process. Evolution of these graphics is very important for future improvements. Design of graphical symbols on control panel helps better recognition of controllers and communicators needed for operator´s effective and safe work. With the rise of numerically controlled machines in the 1970s many new graphical symbols which are used in nowadays were designed. Existing standardized symbols are only examples of meaning without unified design. All symbols in new control panel are necessary graphically unify.
