This paper presents a theoretical analysis of dispersions affecting the high–speed transmission process in optical systems. The discussion is focused on CD, or chromatic dispersion, and PMD, or polarization mode dispersion. These adverse effects are described through definitions and limit values. The second part of the text characterizes the practical measurement of both dispersion types, comparing the obtained results with the related theoretical values and evaluating the acquired data.
