Urbanistická teorie i praxe reaguje na aktuální společenskou situaci, na nové environmentální, demografické a ekonomické výzvy. Jsme svědky dezurbanizačaní procesů, rozrůstá se neutěšená periférie a zdánlivě lukrativní pozemky uvnitř měst zůstávají prázdné, situaci popisujeme jako „zersiedlung“, „urbans sprawl“, „sídelní kaši“, „shrinking cities“ a zároveň coby urbanisté, územní plánovači či ekologicky cítící veřejnost voláme po „udržitelném městě“, „kompaktním městě, „městě krátkých vzdáleností“, „bike friendly city“, „smart city“ apod. Od direktivního „komplexního“, „vědeckého“ plánování, přes živelné „neplánování“ hledáme cestu ke „komunitnímu“ plánování s větší účastí občanů, zaštiťujíce se „obhájcovským“, „spravedlivým“, „sociálním“ modelem urbanismu a novými metodami „good gevernance“.

Urban theory and practice responds to the current social situation, to new environmental, demographic and economic challenges. We are witnesses of de-urbanization processes. Suburbs are growing and seemingly lucrative land within cities remains empty. The situation is described as "zersiedlung", "urban sprawl", or "shrinking cities". At the same time we call urban dedsigners, urban planners and the ecology oriented public for ideas of "sustainable city", "compact city", "city of short distances "," bike friendly city ","smart city" and the like. From directive based "complex" and "academic" methods of planning, through spontaneous "unplanned" way of city making we look for a way how to use "the community based" planning method that includes greater participation of citizens. It is ensured with the "defensive", "justified", and "social" models of urban planning and new methods of "good gevernance".
