Medicinal plants are major natural source of phytochemicals, which are useful to prevent and treat human diseases. In medicinal plants, both primary and secondary metabolites are presented as intermediates or end-products of cellular regulatory pathways. Widely discussed is the impact of geographical and environmental conditions on metabolite composition of medicinal plants. Same plant species growing under different environmental conditions show significant differences in the production and accumulation of metabolites. Therefore, the study of these differences is very important in the chemical characterization of plants with the different geographical origin and are necessary to evaluate in order to confirm or compare their therapeutic or market value in order to improve compositional quality of medicinal plants that are used as medicines. For this reason, is of vital significance for pharmaceutical industry and plant metabolic pathway analysis. However, discovery of unknown or trace natural products is an ongoing challenge. The aim of this study was to find metabolic differences among selected medicinal plant samples to identify potential discrimination biomarkers. Untargeted metabolic profiling analyses were conducted from five plants from Lamiaceae family originated from two different location of the Czech Republic. The analysis was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The metabolites were extracted with a pre-cooled methanol/chloroform/water in the ratio 5:1:1 mixture. A two-step chemical derivatization was pe rformed on the hydrophilic extract using methoxyamine in pyridine (15 min at 60ºC) followed by MSTFA treatment with the same conditions. The obtained metabolomics profiles were statistically compared and visualized using partial least squares discriminant analysis. These profiling data can be used in breeding programs aimed at improving health-related metabolites in medical plants.
