A simple theoretical data model for an object-oriented database is defined to the point of giving a schema together with a set of attribute functions that compute the value of some attributes from others. The user need not specify the actual contents of the database because a suitable "data core" can be inferred by the DBMS to represent the schema. Attributes that are not part of the data core can then be computed automatically. This brings encapsulation of data/algorithms into the data model definition. This principle adds flexibility to information systems and can have applications in easier management of dependencies, adding new functionality on-the-fly, integrating legacy data models etc.
