Heavy metals as pollutants in incinerator - downstream analysis

During thermal disposal of municipal and industrial wastes, a number of objectionable and harmful substances are generated. These harmful substances must be removed from the off-gases by application of mechanical and chemical cleaning processes. Significant group of closely monitored polluting substances are heavy metals, which are subject to the same regulations in the Czech Republic as in EU from the year 2002. To satisfy these requirements, up to 10 times lower concentration of heavy metals must be reached in comparison to levels allowed by previous regulations in the Czech Republic Based on operating measurements, distribution of heavy metals from the waste material to ashes and fly ashes was monitored in selected incinerators of municipal and industrial wastes in the Czech Republic. Collection efficiency of fly ashes and of the related heavy metals was evaluated, that is achieved by mechanical cleaning of the flue gases in electrostatic precipitators, filters and in wet scrubbers. This paper discusses the conditions necessary to achieve concentration of heavy metals at levels required by the valid regulations for emissions from waste incineration plants. The goal of the study was to evaluate the distribution of heavy metals contained in the treated waste into individual streams of solid residues (that are collected in the ash hopper, utility boiler, filter) and into the flue gas stream carrying some of the metals in the form of vapours to the section of absorption and adsorption flue gas cleaning. From the results it will be possible to recognise which of apparatuses is suitable to optimise.
