The measures for the protection and minimization of premature damage of a structure should be proposed in a way that is more advantageous for the proprietor, from the economical point of view, than the structure without protection. Application of surface coating treatment is one of the possibilities. In the paper the development and testing of special protective coatings is described. Protective coatings are suggested for concrete structures exposed to very corrosive environment. Surface protection of concrete structures by protective coating is an expensive secondary measure. A significant part of costs is the price of the material. One of the possibilities to reduce the price is the choice of less expensive material, but one, which still provides sufficient protection to the structure. Another possibility is to replace part of the binder with filler. For price reduction and for indisputable ecological benefits, the utilization of industrial waste materials as filler in coatings was suggested. Three types of industrial wastes were selected: 1) so-called washing wastes, 2) ground blast furnace slag, 3) power plant fly ash. As binders of protective coatings three types of polymers were tested: a) Vinilester (VE), b) Polyester (UP) and c) Polyurethane (PUR).
