Many microbial compounds, such as carotenoids or lipids, have large potential use in various industries. This research is focused on the opti-misation of extraction of such lipophilic compounds from biomass of carotenoid producing yeast and microalgae, using solvents suitable for pharmaceutical or food industry applications (ethanol and hexane) and on determination of their stability while stored at various ambient temperatures, such as in the freezer or in the fridge. The researched microorganisms include strains of yeast from genus Rhodotorula, Cysto-filobasidium or Sporidiobolus and strains of microalgae from genus Scenedesmus, Desmodesmus, Chlorella or Chlamydomonas. Cultivation of these microorganisms include small-scale fermenter cultivations or cultivations in Pyrex Glass Bottles with proper aeration. In general, ethanol proved to be the best extraction solvent, when it comes to pigment extraction from yeast or algae biomass, while hexane proved to be comparably efficient only for some specific samples. However, for lipid extraction from biomass, hexane appears to be the optimal solvent for a significant number of samples. The future research may contain stability experiments at more diverse ambient temperatures, such as physio-logical temperature (37 °C) or a study of addition of tocopherol to the extracts to prolong stability
