The paper describes the development of a sandwich composite beam based on FRP materials, which is a suitable alternative to reinforced concrete beams in specific applications. Its application is mainly in the field of aggressive environments (e.g. wastewater treatment plants), where these materials show higher durability and stability compared to reinforced concrete. Compared to pultruded FRP beams, the developed solution is defined by a more appropriate use of the properties of the sub-components. The optimum use of composite materials, where the upper and lower flange of the beam consists of pultruded composite profiles of TT cross-section (so-called "PI" profile) and the standing composite grating, results in a beam with relatively high stiffness, load-bearing capacity and high resistance to aggressive environments at very low self-weight. The resulting properties of this beam can be varied thanks to the variability of the dimensions of the web as well as a suitable laminate surface treatment. This in the final combination creates a sandwich composite structure. In this paper, the actual experimental verification of the behavior of the composite beam in a 4-point bending test is presented. Different configurations of the beam design allowed to describe the influence of the laminate surface layer (verification of the sandwich functionality), but also the influence of the beam connection at the standing point on the resulting behavior. As a result of the experiments carried out, the physical and mechanical parameters of the sandwich composite beam structure have been obtained and insights for further use of this type of structure have been gained.
