The workshops in foundries are contaminated by toxic gaseous compounds released during casting into moulds. Recently, these moulds and cores contain resins, bentonite or soluble glass as binders of foundry sands. Consequently, the appreciable attention is paid to ecologically friendly conditions, which must meet defined limits. In this respect, resin binders (e.g. furan) exhibit serious problems. Therefore, new ecologically suitable binders are developed. The natural proteins were used in ancient times to improve properties of mortars and concretes. Basic preliminary scanning of natural polymers, which was performed with some natural proteins (e.g. gelatin, collagen etc.) as potential binders of foundry sands, exhibited favourable strengths. As a new binders of 4th generation, different natural biopolymers are being proposed and tested. Bioproteins form bonds with inorganic matrix, even though no chemical reactions take place. Very important is the possibility of recycling of the moulding material containing water-soluble or water-swelling proteins. The thermally undecomposed proteins keep its bonding properties and can be regenerated using water.
