The building and the ornamental types of stone used for the construction and decoration of significant historical buildings in the region of the Bohemian massif in Moravia, the eastern part of the Czech Republic, are presented. In the Romanesque period, the durachite and Permian arcoses and sandstone were the main type of the building stone used. From Baroque to the 20th century, a special type of Devonian limestone, called Krtiny marble from the area of the Moravian karst, was very popular. From the odest times to the 19th cestury, the Jurassic crinoidea limestone was used for many structures in the surroundings of the City of Brno. During the Middle Ages, the crystalline limestones from different parts of the crystalline complexes were exploited. Their beauty and high quality may be seen in some Gothic structures to this day. Since the 19th century, one of the best Czech building stone, the granite from Mrakotin, was exploited and used for many purposes. Petrographical characteristics of the above-mentioned types of the building stone and their technical characteristics are given. Contemporary views on the possibilities of re-establishing quarries in the historical localities are also mentioned.
