Recent gasoline engines have highly efficient aftertreatment systems. However, this efficiency strongly depends on many factors, mainly the composition of burned mixture and the exhaust gas temperature. This temperature is very instable due to transient and dynamic load of the engine under the real drive conditions. This effect of the unstable temperature is more significant with usage of an electrically assisted turbocharger (EAT), when all exhaust gases go through the turbine and the electromotor placed on the shaft of the turbocharger operates also as motor and generator. In this paper, the effect of the temperature instability with usage of an EAT was investigated on a 1-D turbocharged gasoline engine model, with a focus on the exhaust gas temperature. Based on the results, the usage of an EAT in a gasoline engine has shown significant instability of the temperature which can cause decrease the efficiency of the aftertreatment system and higher material requirements for turbocharger.
