Environmental regulations limiting atmospheric emissions of pollutants are progressively becoming stricter. It is therefore necessary to develop new flue gas cleaning technologies and improve already existing ones. To achieve this, it is important to apply in the design phase new, more reliable modelling approaches to process description, like computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This way, we can obtain better understanding of processes, occurring inside the respective devices. Namely, the present work is concerned with wet scrubbing process, which is one of the most popular methods of flue gas cleaning. One of the biggest handicaps of wet scrubbing is a large pressure drop. Its prediction is a difficult task, requiring modelling of the flow in the wet scrubber. Two-phase flow, which occurs in the wet scrubbing process, is typically described more or less successfully by empirical correlations. However, recent advances in computer technology and CFD modelling of two-phase flows open the door for simulations as an attractive alternative to empiricism. This work is concerned with characterization of two-phase flow in a venturi scrubber using commercial code FLUENT 6.2. Euler-Euler model is employed. Computations are performed for laboratory equipment and the results are validated by measured pressure drop data.
